How to Choose Wedding Stationery | Mint for Hue

choosing a wedding stationerLet me introduce you today to Juliann, wedding stationer and creator over at Mint for Hue.  Juliann is a Chippewa Valley based graphic designer who specializes in all things wedding stationery related.  Her career in designing wedding stationery at Mint for Hue all started making mud pies growing up on a farm.  No really, and as she puts it – she graduated from crayons to “beautiful papers, interesting textures, captivating colors, and stylized lettering and calligraphy.”  Mint for Hue has recently been featured on Style Me Pretty & in WI Bride Magazine.

Juliann and I worked together on a stylized shoot earlier this summer.  I contacted her to see if she’d be interested in collaborating with me on that project to help bring it to life and she jumped on board and we haven’t looked back since.  I trust Juliann 100% – she’s got a keen eye and a fabulous sense of style that she infuses into each client’s wedding stationery suite with personality and care.  It was so much fun to watch Juliann bring a vision to life with little bits of inspiration and see the work come full circle in printed to choose wedding stationery

I’m turning over the blog today to Juliann to talk about how to choose a wedding stationer to bring your wedding vision to life.  See, your wedding stationery sets the tone for your day for your guests from the moment the save the date arrives in the mail all the way through from your invitations, wedding programs, seating chart, menus all wrapping up with your beautifully designed thank you notes.  Let a professional graphic designer take the stress out of designing and printing these items for you and let you focus on other pieces of the day – like your gorgeous gown, honeymoon and making a life more beautiful than your wedding day.

How to do I select a wedding stationer?
First and foremost, I believe that your wedding stationer should be someone who is relatable, easy to talk to, and shows enthusiasm to help with your big day. You could potentially spend over a year discussing stationery items with them (from save the dates to thank you cards!) so an easygoing, personable relationship is a must! It’s also important that your designer’s aesthetics mirror your wedding vision, ensuring cohesiveness and uniformity. Lastly, a lot of particulars and formalities go into wedding stationery so it is critical to hire an organized and experienced designer who will take care of all of the cumbersome details that often get overlooked.

What does my stationer need to know about my wedding day?
Everything! Let your stationery designer know about your wedding dress, the bridesmaid dresses, the ceremony site, the reception venue, the color scheme, the centerpiece décor, the bouquets, even your wedding cake! All of these details help your stationer visualize your overall theme and the aesthetics that appeal to you. But it’s not just about your wedding day, it’s about who you two are as a couple and your love story. Your designer should want to know the story of how you and your fiancé met and the dreams you two share. I personally like to work in meaningful phrases or iconic graphics that emerged from your relationship into your stationery collection to truly make it unique

Can I bring or show you examples of invitation suites that I love?
Inspirational pieces are always welcomed, but sometimes too many examples can be restricting. Remember, you are hiring a wedding stationery designer to create a unique collection that represents your relationship. And every relationship is unique and special in it’s own way. Show concepts but trust your stationer & let them be the expert.

What if I don’t know the style of stationery I want?
If you don’t have a particular style or layout in mind for your stationery, no worries! Describe all of your wedding details and trust your designer to interpret that look onto paper. Let your designer know what you need and what you don’t need and based on your budget, they can dream up something custom to your needs and aesthetics. And I think most designers can agree, the most successful collections are the ones that we have the most freedom on.

FAQ from a Wedding Stationery Designer:
  • When should I secure my wedding on your calendar? Right away! I often book clients several months in advance and since I am a firm believer on quality over quantity, I only take on a few clients every month to ensure that every single client gets undivided attention.
  • How long does the design process take? The design process for wedding invitations typically takes 2-4 weeks, depending on how thorough the questionnaire is filled out and how quick response times are.
  • What kinds of wedding stationery items can you create? The skies the limit! From wedding invitations, save the dates, escort cards, wedding programs, table numbers and menus, I have designed it all. Custom stamps, thank you cards, hang tags, wine or bottle labels, welcome kits, wedding itineraries, guest books, belly bands, rehearsal dinner invitations, easel signage, napkin wraps…I even designed custom placesetting crossword puzzles!
  • Will you make recommendations on what options I have? Definitely! During the initial consultation, I give my couples all sorts of options based on their needs. Whether they are interested in simplifying their collection or are interested in unique add-on items, I give recommendations based on what they’re trying to achieve. And when I send over the first round of digital proofs, I include mocks (for FREE!) of coordinating envelope options, recipient address printing ideas, a custom envelope liner design, and even a belly band or hang tag option to tie it all together. Clients then have a really good idea of how the entire collection will look once it’s assembled.
  • What about fun extra items do make my invitations truly memorable to my guests? (welcome box, signs, menus, wax seals… talk about the goodies you would love for your ideal client to purchase) There are so many possibilities to really make your family and friends feel special…yes, even on your wedding day! Not only is your day about celebrating your marriage, it’s about celebrating what you all have in common: love. To make your guests feel extra special, certainly consider thinking outside of the box when it comes to your wedding stationery. After all, it’s the first glimpse they will have of your wedding and what they can expect. Custom calligraphy definitely makes your invitation stand out from all those bills in the mail. Custom envelope liners are a great unexpected surprise when they open up your invitation. And wax seals are definitely a wow-factor. But don’t feel the need to stop there; you can pull extra special touches into your big day, too! Specialty items such as a custom guest book, oversized easel signage, and even unique place cards that double as favors will have your friends and family completely smitten with all the care that went into all of these thoughtful details.
